The Local Biodiversity action plan is a good example of how F.E.T. can help to maintain a worthwhile project that goes through several extensions. In this case there was an initial 3 year plan with a further 3 extensions, giving the project a total life span of over 6 years.
The Project was the result of the formation of the Falkirk Area Biodiversity action group, which then worked up the proposal of bringing in a specialist to develop the Local Biodiversity Action Plan. This plan identifies species that are either rare or threatened in the area or are indicators to the health of the entire ecosystem. This knowledge was gained through a number of surveys , consultations and research. The end result of the process has been the production of the LBAP, plus updates, which names these species and describes plans of action to conserve encourage their continued survival.
The money was used in part payment of the officers' wages and expenses, in partnership with SNH'S, Falkirk Council, and several other Agencies.
The environment of Falkirk has benefited hugely from this process - not only do we now know what the key species an and where they are located, but we have plans of action which will hopefully increase future species richness and diversity.
