Falkirk Wood is a non-profit company set up to utilise hardwood timber from the local area, which would otherwise end up as landfill. Much of the timber used by Falkirk Wood would be rejected by larger timber merchants, as the quantity is too small, and in many cases the timber is not regular enough to be milled using standard processes. However, often this timber has much character, with many knots and burrs created by the natural growth of the tree. Falkirk Wood acquires the timber, then dries and mills it for sale. Products include wood for table tops, mantelpieces and woodworking as well as hardwood flooring to customer specification.
The grant money awarded to Falkirk Wood was used to purchase a kiln to dry the timber, dehumidified storage facilities and machinery for milling and processing the wood.
Falkirk Wood operates on a sustainable, non-profit basis, diverting from landfill. Woodchips and by-products from the milling process are used to fuel the kiln for drying wood. Second-hand machinery was purchased, which reuses materials, again reducing landfill. Falkirk Wood also encourages the management of small woodlands, enhancing biodiversity, whilst providing a sustainable natural resource. The use of local hardwoods also reduces the need for imports of exotic hardwoods, which often come from rainforests.
