The River Avon Heritage Trail project aims to improve public footpaths along the course of the River Avon between the Avon Gorge and Linlithgow Bridge. From the Heritage Trail, visitors can access Muiravonside Country Park and the Union Canal.
As part of the project, new sections of footpath were created and existing paths upgraded. Steps, fencing, gates, benches and handrails were used to improve access. Information boards and path signposts were also installed.
There are many areas of woodland along the River Avon, including protected areas such as Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINCs), a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Important Ancient Woodlands. As such, the River Avon provides an important link for wildlife between these woodlands. Part of the project aimed to increase biodiversity by managing areas of woodland along the trail and planting native trees
The grant awarded to the River Avon Heritage Trail was used to surface paths, construct steps, and install fencing, gates, benches and signs, as well as to manage areas of woodland along the Trail.
The project benefits the environment by providing footpaths, allowing people to walk instead of using cars. Walking is a sustainable form of transport, which avoids pollution. Exercise, such as walking, jogging and cycling also provides health benefits, improving people’s lives. By encouraging people to enjoy and take interest in their local environment, the environment can be better respected and protected.
