The project has now been successfully completed, and is heavily used by walkers, cyclists, Horse riders and is accessible from the major tourist attraction of the Falkirk Wheel.

Project Description:

This project involved the improvement of the rough pasture land to the north of the Roman Fort at Roughcastle, replanting it with native Scottish tree species. Further, a new path link will be constructed to enhance existing networks in the area. The project was awarded a FET Main Grant on the basis of it's improvement of public access to green space, and it's increase of Falkirk's' Forest cover, thus enhancing biodiversity in accordance with the Falkirk Area Biodiversity Action Plan.

Use of FET Grant::

The Grant will be used to cover the following area of works;

1) Commission a report on the mature / over mature trees on site. Trees will be identified as individuals that are unsafe and in need of limb workings or routine monitoring.

2) Remove sycamore stems including pole length and regeneration, across the site.

3) Remove Beech regeneration.

4) Control bracken.

5) expand the woodland by 3.56 hectares, using native species.

6) Creating a new path which runs along the inside edge of the new woodland, joining with the current system at the bottom of the hill to create a walking loop.

Due to the proximity of the Antonine wall and the Roman Fort, all works will be undertaken with due care and in consultation with Historic Scotland.

Environmental Benefits::

This will be through through the planting of an extension to the existing forest, increasing to habitat for a variety of plants and animals.
